overview

Designing a learning platform for exam candidates

The goal of this project was to build an education platform designed specifically for people preparing for competitive exams. The solution combined structured content with personalized tools to help users study more efficiently and perform better in assessments. As the Product Designer, I led the UI and UX work, ensuring interactions were intuitive, accessible, and aligned with user needs. I worked closely with a Product Manager and three engineers, iterating continuously to keep the solution both technically feasible and product-ready.

THE PROBLEM

Building a modern, trustworthy alternative

The exam-prep tools market is crowded, but many products share the same issue: outdated, unattractive interfaces that hurt both perceived quality and user engagement. The opportunity was to deliver a clean, modern experience that feels professional and keeps users coming back. Main goals: · Increase time-on-platform with a friendly experience that supports learning · Improve test completion rates through dynamic, interactive formats · Raise user satisfaction with a polished UI that stands out from competitors Our objective was to position the platform as a professional, functional alternative that meets (and exceeds) current market standards.

THE PROCESS

Research- and data-driven

Competitive research

Before starting the design, we ran a competitor analysis focused on popular products (e.g., “Test Policía Nacional”). This helped us understand what worked, what didn’t, and where the market was failing users. Strengths observed: · Large question banks in platforms like Granapoli and Policía Ninja · Mobile apps that improve accessibility · Gamification features (e.g., “El Rincón del Policía”) to keep users engaged Weaknesses observed: · Outdated visual design that creates a negative perception · Limited content personalization, reducing adaptability to different user needs · Too much focus on long-form courses instead of fast self-assessment tools Market gap: a modern, professional platform combining gamification, personalization, and advanced functionality for serious exam preparation.

Main product flows

1. Dashboard: progress metrics and interactive charts 2. Syllabus: structured content with options to track completion 3. Study: personalized tests and performance insights 4. Exam: realistic simulations with immediate results 5. Ranking: leaderboards to encourage healthy competition 6. PvP games: interactive challenges based on syllabus questions 7. Trivia: group competitions to reinforce knowledge in a fun way

VISUAL DESIGN & VALIDATION

We prioritized a clean, modern UI and validated it through internal tests with potential users. This feedback helped us refine information hierarchy and improve the navigation structure before moving forward.

RESULTS

Positive response from users and stakeholders

The project received a strong response from both users and the client. User feedback: candidates valued the modern look and the ease of use. Highlights: “It’s much more modern and practical than other tools.” “The content structure and the metrics are really useful.” Client feedback: the client was enthusiastic about the design, which enabled a faster path toward implementation. Afterward, the scope expanded to include new features.

Key takeaways

This project reinforced three key practices: · Strong upfront analysis: investing time to understand users led to decisions aligned with real expectations · User empathy: designing around common study pain points resulted in a clearer, more engaging experience · Effective collaboration: steady communication with the client kept the project aligned and reduced rework

This project strengthened my ability to design a product from scratch and reinforced the value of empathy and analysis in every decision. I’m ready to apply these learnings to future challenges.
