Overview

Updating a core tool to maximize its impact.

PLUG is an operational platform used to manage tasks, asset locations, and offline synchronization. While it included advanced functionality, the visual design and user experience made adoption and everyday use harder than necessary. As Product Designer, my role was to redesign the interface, improve existing flows, and introduce new sections, while keeping the product familiar for current users.

THE PROBLEM

A high-potential tool stuck in the past.

Key barriers to adoption: · Outdated interface: confusing hierarchy made it hard to find critical data and actions. · Low visual appeal: the UI hurt perceived quality and reduced user engagement. · Lack of clarity: existing flows were not flexible enough, reducing operational efficiency. The challenge: modernize PLUG without breaking familiarity for existing users—improving usability while preserving trusted behaviors.

THE PROCESS

Improving a solid foundation.

Initial analysis

· Visual refresh: create a modern, accessible interface. · Flow clarity: improve information hierarchy and data readability. · Key task optimization: simplify and reorganize critical steps.

Redesigned core flows

We delivered meaningful improvements across: 1. Dashboard: redesigned to surface key metrics and pending tasks in a clear, actionable way. 2. Task creation & assignment: simplified steps to include location data, attachments, and descriptions. 3. Data sync: improved screens to communicate sync status and completed tasks. 4. New sections: added areas to make operational data easier to access and manage.

Iterations & validation

1. Client feedback: multiple refinements to the dashboard and key features to align with the client’s vision. 2. Internal testing: validation with key users within the team to ensure clarity and efficiency across redesigned flows.ñados

RESULTS

A more modern and effective product.

· Higher user retention: a meaningful increase driven by a more modern, accessible experience. · Positive reception: existing users highlighted that the product still felt familiar—now with clearer UI and improved functionality. · Stronger brand perception: the modernization positioned PLUG as a more professional and competitive tool. Measured via internal feedback and onboarding observations.

LESSONS LEARNED

Adapting and overcoming constraints.

1. Fast ramp-up: joining an ongoing project with limited context was challenging, but I aligned quickly with client goals. 2. Continuous iteration: frequent design changes reinforced the value of clear communication with stakeholders. 3. Balancing innovation and familiarity: improving a product without alienating existing users was key to success.

Redesigning PLUG required finding the right balance between innovation and established workflows. The project strengthened my ability to optimize complex products and reinforced my commitment to user-centered design.
